A reconstruction of Jostedalsbreen during the Little Ice Age and geometric changes to outlet glaciers since then

چکیده
Mountain glaciers and ice caps are undergoing rapid mass loss but rates of present-day changes models future projections both lack long-term (centennial-scale) context. Here, we reconstruct the maximum glacier extent surface Jostedalsbreen, which is largest in mainland Europe, during Little Ice Age (LIA) ∼ 1740 to 1860. The LIA ice-covered area was 568 km2 volume between 61 km3 91 km3. We show that major outlet have lost at least 110 or 19% their 14 18% until 2006. proportional for individual associated with falls consequent disconnection tributaries. Glacier-specific hypsometry suggest a mean rise ELA 135 m there wide inter-glacier variability. A median date 1755 suggests rate has been 0.05 w.e. a−1. That virtually same as modern rates, contrasts findings other studies around world reporting acceleration since LIA. Overall, highlight utility geomorphological-based reconstructions understanding quantifying responses climate hence meltwater production proglacial landscape evolution.

Rapid changes in ice discharge from Greenland outlet glaciers.
Using satellite-derived surface elevation and velocity data, we found major short-term variations in recent ice discharge and mass loss at two of Greenland's largest outlet glaciers. Their combined rate of mass loss doubled in less than a year in 2004 and then decreased in 2006 to near the previous rates, likely as a result of fast re-equilibration of calving-front geometry after retreat. Total...

For this study two sediment cores from the Peruvian shelf covering the time period between the Little Ice Age (LIA) and present were examined for changes in productivity (biogenic opal concentrations (bSi)), nutrient utilisation (stable isotope compositions of silicon (δSiopal) and nitrogen (δNsed)), as well as in ocean circulation and material transport (authigenic and detrital radiogenic neod...
متن کاملEvidence for external forcing of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation since termination of the Little Ice Age
The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) represents a significant driver of Northern Hemisphere climate, but the forcing mechanisms pacing the AMO remain poorly understood. Here we use the available proxy records to investigate the influence of solar and volcanic forcing on the AMO over the last ~450 years. The evidence suggests that external forcing played a dominant role in pacing the AMO ...
